Nostal
"Nostal" is an speculative space design project inspired by sense of prospect and refuge from personal childhood memories — from climbing a giant rock near our rural family home to constructing makeshift pillow forts in my grandma’s house. The design features a multi-level house structure with a bedroom, garden, and balcony. Key elements of the space include obscure entrances, varied levels, and contrasting textures and materials. The refuge areas offer intimate, enclosed spaces, while the prospect spaces provide open, elevated views, capturing the essence of exploration and comfort from my childhood experiences.
The structure is inspired by the daylighting effect in Tadao Ando’s Water Temple, in which the sunlight creates a “step” that is exactly the same size as the stairs preceding it on a specific date and time. Based on the speculative location coordinates of 23.7378, 113.0172 (my grandma’s home), sunlight perfectly fills the gap between the second level railing on May 23rd at 11AM, a time of personal significance.
